Technical Description
The Caterpillar 966F Wheel Loader is a robust, mid-sized construction machine designed for high productivity and durability. Powered by a turbocharged Cat 3306 six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 640.8 cu in, it delivers 235 hp (175 kW) gross power and 220 hp (164 kW) net power at 2200 rpm. The planetary powershift transmission offers four forward and four reverse gears, enabling a top forward speed of 23.4 mph (37 kph) and reverse speed of 26.5 mph (42 kph). The hydraulic system features a pump flow capacity of 79.8 gal/min (299 l/min) with a relief valve setting of 3000 psi, delivering efficient bucket operation times: 2 sec dump, 2.4 sec lower, and 7.1 sec raise.
The loader’s bucket has a breakout force of 48,446 lbs (21,975 kg) and a capacity of 4.8 cu yds heaped (4.1 cu yds struck), with a width of 10.2 ft (3 m). It provides 9.4 ft (3 m) dump clearance at max raise and a reach of 4.6 ft (1 m) at max lift and dump. The machine measures 27.5 ft (8 m) in length with the bucket on the ground, 11.8 ft (3 m) in height to the top of the cab, and 9.7 ft (3 m) wide over tires. It has a 1.6 ft (0.5 m) ground clearance, 11 ft (3 m) wheelbase, and a turning radius of 22.3 ft (7 m).
Operating weight is approximately 45,162 lbs (20,485 kg) with a static tipping weight of 30,825 lbs (13,982 kg). The 26.5-25 14PR tires provide stable traction, enhanced by rear axle oscillation of 26°. Fuel capacity is 80.4 gal (303 L), with hydraulic fluid at 54.2 gal (204 L) and transmission fluid at 15.6 gal (57 L). The Caterpillar 966F is engineered for strength, reliability, and operator comfort, featuring a full box-section frame, spread-hitch design, and an ergonomic operator’s station with excellent visibility and automatic shift control.
