Technical Description
The 2004 Caterpillar 120M Motor Grader features a robust Cat C6.6 ACERT engine delivering net power between 138 to 182 hp (103-136 kW) at 2,000 rpm, with a torque rise of 40% and a maximum torque around 668 lb-ft (906 Nm). It has a six-cylinder, 6.6 L displacement with a bore of 4.13 in (105 mm) and a stroke of 5.0 in (127 mm), optimized for efficiency and emissions compliance (Tier 3 equivalent). The grader operates without engine derating up to 11,500 ft (3,505 m) altitude and sustains ambient temperatures up to 122°F (50°C) with a fan speed maxing at 1,150 rpm. The drivetrain includes an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system with a direct drive, power shift, countershaft transmission offering eight forward and six reverse gears and a maximum forward speed of approximately 29.5 mph (47.5 km/h). The hydraulic system is an electro-hydraulic load-sensing, closed-center circuit powered by variable piston pumps with output pressures up to 24,192 kPa.
The 120M has an operating weight around 40,565 lb (18,400 kg) and overall length near 27.85 ft (8.48 m). Its moldboard (blade) spans 12 ft wide with a maximum lift height of approximately 16.8 in (427 mm), a cutting depth near 28.3 in (720 mm), and side shift capabilities of 26 in left and 20 in right. It features 360° circle rotation with slip clutch and circle saver, blade tip angles of 40° forward and 5° backward, and a ripper attachment with five shanks achieving a maximum ripping depth of 16.8 in and a penetration force around 20,800 lb. The grader’s frame articulation is ±20°, with steering range of 47.5° on the front axle and 20° on the frame, enabling excellent maneuverability. Operator comfort is enhanced via a spacious cab with adjustable suspension seat and HVAC system for quieter, all-weather operation.
