Technical Description

The Fives Giddings & Lewis RT 1600 Horizontal Machining Center is a high-capacity, 5-axis CNC horizontal boring mill designed for heavy-duty machining applications. It features a large work table measuring 63" x 78.7" with an optional extended width of 98", supporting a maximum workpiece weight of 55,100 lbs. The horizontal spindle, with a #50 ANSI B5.50 taper and optional SK 50 taper, operates at speeds up to 4,000 RPM (optional 3,500 RPM) driven by a 60 HP motor (30-minute rating). The machine includes a robust 60-tool automatic tool changer, expandable to 120 tools for enhanced flexibility and productivity. Axis travels include an X-axis of 98.4" (optionally 141.7"), Y-axis of 78.7" (optionally up to 141.7"), and Z-axis of 31.5" (optionally 49.1"), each capable of rapid traverse and feed rates up to 984 ipm. The RT 1600 combines a rigid foundation with a modular design, allowing customization such as different headstocks and attachments including contouring heads and programmable boring bars. It incorporates advanced CNC control (Fanuc 310i or equivalents) for precise positioning and high-speed machining, supported by features like thru-spindle coolant and high-pressure coolant options. The machine is engineered for superior stiffness and accuracy, using preloaded roller ways that provide long service life, reduced friction, and excellent contouring performance.
