Technical Description
The 1996 Galion 850B Motor Grader is a heavy-duty articulated machine designed for demanding grading applications, with an operating weight of 42,000 lbs. It is powered by a 6-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 12.5 L (763 in³), delivering a net power output of 238–285 hp at 1,850 rpm and a maximum torque of 1,137 lbf-ft with a 41% torque rise. The engine is paired with a powershift transmission, providing a top forward speed of 31.4 mph and a top reverse speed of 24.8 mph. The hydraulic system features a closed-center, variable displacement piston pump, producing 40–51 gal/min at 1,800–2,200 rpm and operating at approximately 2,150 psi. The machine is equipped with a 14–16 ft blade, a 71.7 in circle diameter, and a blade beam thickness of 2 in, allowing for a maximum cut depth of 28.9 in and a maximum lift above ground of 18.9 in. Ground clearance at the center exceeds 24 in. The grader offers an articulation angle of 18° left and right, a full 360° circle rotation, and tandem oscillation of 32°. The blade tip angle ranges up to 40° forward and 5° backward, with side shift capabilities of 20–29 in. Front steering reaches a maximum angle of 47.5°, and frame steering is 20° left and right. The fuel tank capacity ranges from 23.5 to 75 gal, and the tandem housing fluid capacity is approximately 26.4 gal. The electrical system includes a standard 115-amp or heavy-duty 150-amp alternator at 24V.
