Technical Description
The Gradall XL 5100 is a heavy-duty highway speed wheeled excavator designed for versatile construction and excavation tasks. It features a robust Volvo diesel engine delivering a net power of 245 hp (183 kW), with a gross rating reaching up to 315 hp at 2300 rpm, ensuring strong performance and compliance with Tier 5 emissions standards. This inline six-cylinder, turbocharged, liquid-cooled engine incorporates SCR, DPF, DOC, and an uncooled EGR system for high fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The excavator weighs approximately 55,275 lbs, providing a balance between stability and mobility. It has a maximum digging depth of 25 ft and a digging reach extending to 34 ft, enabling deep and wide excavation capabilities.
The XL 5100’s hydraulic system includes four double-acting cylinders for boom, hoist, tilt, and tool movements, operating at pressures up to 4,800 psi, with axial piston motors and a planetary transmission. The boom tilts 220° for precise sloping, grading, and material spreading, maintaining consistent power throughout the entire dig cycle. Hydraulic functions support rated boom forces around 24,500 lbs and bucket breakout forces near 24,900 lbs, ensuring efficient excavation and material handling.
This model features a 6x4 or 6x6 drive configuration with a 171-inch wheelbase and 102-inch width, supported by a welded plate frame made with 65 ksi material for structural integrity. The Allison 3000 RDS six-speed automatic transmission enables smooth travel up to highway speeds of 60 mph without the need for outriggers. Operator comfort is enhanced by an ergonomically designed cab with sound-deadening, air suspension seating, climate control, joystick controls integrated into armrests, and comprehensive gauges including oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel and DEF levels.
Additional features include a priority swing circuit with swing speed up to 8 rpm, an automatic spring-set hydraulic release swing brake, dynamic hydraulic braking, and convenient electronic engine shutdown alarms for safety and maintenance. The XL 5100’s remote propel capability improves job site maneuverability, while its hydraulic system supports precise and smooth tool operation essential for demanding excavation, demolition, and material handling applications.
