Technical Description

The LeTourneau L950 is a heavy-duty wheel loader designed for demanding mining and construction applications. It features a powerful turbocharged QST 30 engine delivering 1050 hp (783 kW) at 1900 rpm with a displacement of 1861 cu in. The standard bucket has an 18 cubic yards (14 m³) heaped capacity with a breakout force of 160,000 lbs (72,576 kg), a bucket width of 16.7 ft (5 m), and a dump clearance at max raise of 15.7 ft (5 m). The high lift version offers a slightly smaller bucket capacity of 16 cu yds (12 m³) but increases the breakout force to 165,000 lbs (74,844 kg) and dump clearance to 17.3 ft (5 m). Dimensions include a ground clearance of 1.9 ft (0.6 m), height to cab top of 18.5 ft (5.6 m), hinge pin max height of up to 24.5 ft (7.5 m) on the high lift model, overall length near 50 ft (15 m), and a wheelbase of 19.5 ft (6 m). The loader runs on large 45/65-45 tires and weighs approximately 235,000 lbs (106,600 kg) standard or 240,000 lbs (108,900 kg) for the high lift. Hydraulics operate via a 250 gal/min piston pump at 3700 psi relief, enabling a 10-second raise time, 2-second dump time, and 5-second lower time. Cooling and fluid capacities support extended heavy use, including 564.8 gal (2,135 L) fuel and 260 gal (984 L) hydraulic fluid. The transmission is infinitely variable with a max speed of 15 mph (24 kph) forward and reverse. The rear axle oscillates 22° for terrain adaptability, and the turning radius is roughly 32–35 ft (10–11 m), depending on the model. This combination of power, capacity, and robust hydraulics makes the L950 well-suited for large-scale material handling and mining operations.
