Technical Description

The Makino MAG3.EX is a high-performance 5-axis horizontal machining center designed primarily for aerospace aluminum components, featuring extensive travels of 157.5" (X), 59.1" (Y), and 39.4" (Z) with a rapid traverse rate of up to 2,468 inches per minute on all three axes. It employs a powerful 33,000 rpm spindle rated at 130 kW (174 HP), delivering exceptional metal removal rates. The machine supports a 180-tool automatic tool changer, enabling tool-to-tool changes in 10 seconds and chip-to-chip changes in just 8.5 seconds, optimizing productivity. The A-axis offers ±110° tilt, and the C-axis provides full 360° rotation, allowing comprehensive five-face workpiece access with reduced setup times. It accommodates large workpieces up to approximately 157.5" x 59.1" x 29.5" and handles payloads up to 6,600 lbs. The MAG3.EX incorporates enhanced contouring acceleration reaching 1 G and high cutting feedrates up to 1,968 inches per minute, ensuring rapid, precise machining. Its design includes an integrated horizontal work-setting station for efficient workpiece loading comparable to vertical machining centers. Additionally, it can be combined with Makino’s automatic pallet transfer and storage systems for extended unattended operation. The control system features Pro6 with real-time spindle monitoring, adaptive control, and extensive automatic recovery and maintenance functions, contributing to high machine utilization and reliability. This machining center is engineered to minimize non-cutting times, maximize spindle cutting time, and provide robust chip and coolant management tailored for high-volume aluminum aerospace manufacturing.
