The MAKINO U6i Wire EDM machine features a work envelope with travel capacities of 25.6 inches (X-axis), 17.7 inches (Y-axis), and 16.5 inches (Z-axis), supporting a maximum workpiece size of approximately 1000 x 800 x 420 mm. It is equipped with a CNC control system that enables precise, highly repeatable machining operations. The U6i employs advanced high-speed EDM technology compatible with wire diameters ranging from 0.004" to 0.016" (0.100 mm to 0.400 mm), including a unique coated wire option that allows cutting rates twice as fast as traditional brass wire. This machine delivers exceptional surface finishes down to 0.07–0.1 μm and supports intricate details with the HyperDrive Extreme wire path system, which maintains tight wire tension for improved part accuracy and straightness. Thermal stability is maintained by an integrated high-accuracy water chiller, preserving dielectric fluid temperature within ±0.1°C, which enhances dimensional accuracy and process repeatability. The dielectric system is embedded within the machine’s base for reduced footprint and consistent thermal control. The U6i also boasts a four-filter filtration system with air purge for extended filter life and efficient maintenance. Automated Wire Threading (AWT) with multi-step water jet technology enables rapid threading cycles including for fine holes with multiple threading modes. The wire guide system uses a tool-less, precise indexing design that reduces setup and maintenance time while ensuring alignment repeatability within 5 microns. Overall, the MAKINO U6i combines large work capacity with premium precision, high speed, and low wire consumption for demanding job-shop, medical, and micromachining applications.
