Technical Description
The DMG MORI NLX 4000Y is a large horizontal CNC turning center in the NLX series with a Y-axis turret for milling operations. Its standard spindle has a JIS A2-11 nose, a 145 mm (5.7 in.) through-spindle hole sized for a 15 in. chuck, 117 mm bar capacity, and a maximum speed of 2,000 rpm from a 37 kW (50 hp) 30-minute rated motor, 30 kW (40 hp) continuous. A 185 mm (7.3 in.) bore spindle for an 18 in. chuck was offered as an option. With the milling and Y-axis turret the maximum turning diameter is 19.69 in. (500 mm), and swing over the bed is 39.4 in. The Y-axis travel is 120 mm (plus/minus 60 mm), X-axis travel is 315 mm, and rapid traverse is 30 m/min on X and Z. The built-in motor turret runs rotary tools up to 10,000 rpm, with a high-torque 4,000 rpm version rated at 10 kW. The machine was built in 750 and 1500 bed lengths, giving maximum turning lengths of about 29 in. and 61 in. Coolant circulates through the castings to limit thermal displacement. Typical work includes large shafts, pipe and oil-field components and flanges that need heavy turning and milling in one setup.
