Technical Description

The Hardinge Cobra 51 is a 2-axis CNC turning center from Hardinge's Cobra line of collet-ready chucking/bar lathes, built for general-purpose production turning. It uses an A2-6 spindle nose with a 20C collet nose and a 2-inch round bar capacity, driven by a 20 hp AC spindle motor with a speed range of 100-4,500 rpm. Machining capacity covers an 8.25-inch maximum turning diameter and a 14-inch maximum turning length, with 7.75-inch X-axis and 14-inch Z-axis travel at rapid traverse rates of 472 ipm (X) and 787 ipm (Z). The standard 12-station turret accepts indexable tooling for OD and ID work. A programmable tailstock is fitted, with an MT#3 quill taper, 22 inches of manual body travel, and 4 inches of quill travel. The control is a GE Fanuc 21iT CNC with a 9-inch CRT display and an RS-232C port for DNC operation. The machine measures approximately 129 x 66 x 68 inches and weighs approximately 8,000 lbs. Standard equipment includes a hydraulic power collet closer, programmable tailstock quill, and a standard coolant system. Two independent used-equipment dealer listings for the same machine (one installed new in 2000) report identical specifications, giving high confidence in the figures above; the model is not cataloged with an optional chuck, so no chuck size is published.
