Technical Description

The Hardinge Cobra 65 is a slant-bed CNC chucking and bar lathe built by Hardinge Inc. of Elmira, New York, and named for its 65 mm (2.5 in.) bar capacity. It offers a maximum machining diameter of 10.47 in. and a maximum turning length of 31 in. A 12-station turret carries the tooling, and the standard workholding is a 10 in. three-jaw hydraulic chuck. Z-axis travel is 31 in., and rapid traverse rates are 472 ipm on X and 787 ipm on Z. A tailstock with an MT-4 taper supports longer shafts, and a chip conveyor and coolant system are common equipment. The spindle nose is an A2-series mount, and bar work is fed through the spindle from a bar feeder at the rear of the headstock. Machines of the late 1990s and early 2000s were fitted with FANUC 21-series CNC controls. The Cobra 65 is the largest of the Hardinge Cobra family, which also included the Cobra 42 and Cobra 51, and it suits general job-shop and production turning of bar and chucked parts.
