A+Technical Description
The JET EGH-1740 Manual Lathe is a heavy-duty geared head engine lathe designed for precision machining and durability. With a 17-inch swing over the bed and a 40-inch distance between centers, it accommodates large workpieces for a wide range of turning applications. The lathe features a robust 3.125-inch spindle bore and a D1-6 spindle mount, supporting versatile tooling and workholding options. Powered by a 7.5 HP, 230/460V, 3-phase motor, the EGH-1740 delivers reliable performance with a spindle speed range of 36 to 1,800 RPM across 12 speeds, ensuring optimal cutting conditions for various materials. The machine’s universal gearbox enables inch, metric, modular, and diametral thread cutting without gear changes, offering 45 inch thread options (2–72 TPI) and 39 metric thread options (0.2–14 mm). Longitudinal feeds range from 0.0015 to 0.04 inches per revolution, while cross feeds range from 0.00075 to 0.02 inches per revolution, supporting fine and coarse feed requirements. The lathe’s Meehanite cast iron construction provides excellent vibration damping and stability, while CNC-style lighting and an enclosed splash guard enhance visibility and operator safety. Nylon safety gears in the end train prevent overloading, and an enclosed coolant system contains excess coolant for improved safety and cleanliness. The compound slide offers 6-2/7 inches of travel, and the maximum tool size supported is 1" x 1". The EGH-1740 measures 94 inches long, 44 inches wide, and 68 inches high, with a weight of 3,747 lbs, making it a stable and robust solution for demanding shop environments.
