Technical Description

The Mazak MEGA TURN 500 is a vertical CNC turning center built for heavy chucked parts, with the spindle facing up so gravity helps with loading and chip evacuation. It uses a traveling column design rather than a cross rail, so the maximum machining diameter is not limited by the machine structure. Maximum machining diameter is 19.69 in and maximum machining height is 18.11 in, with a maximum loading weight of 1,102 lb. The standard chuck is 12 in, with 15 in and 18 in chucks as options. The spindle runs to 3,000 rpm and is driven by a 26 kW (35 hp) motor rated 22 kW (30 hp) continuous, delivering a maximum torque of 596 ft-lb. Tooling is carried on a 12-position drum turret that accepts 1 in tool shanks and 2 in boring bars. Axis travels are 14 in in X and 20 in in Z, with rapid traverse of 1,181 ipm on both axes. The machine stands 118 in high and weighs 20,392 lb. A mirror-image version is sold as the MEGA TURN 500S, and a version with rotary tools is sold as the MEGA TURN 500M.
