Technical Description
The Mori Seiki SL-603 is a large, heavy-duty two-axis CNC turning center in the SL series, designed for high-rigidity, stable heavy cutting. It uses slideways on all axes, a triangular saddle and a trapezoidal bed, a construction the maker chose for large machines. The spindle was offered in three through-hole sizes: 180 mm (7.1 in) on the B version, 275 mm (10.8 in) on the C version and 370 mm (14.6 in) on the D version, so the machine can pass large-diameter pipe and bar. Maximum workpiece diameter is 36.6 in. The machine was built in /1000, /2000, /3000 and /4000 bed lengths, giving maximum workpiece lengths of 39, 79, 118 and 157 in. X-axis stroke is 19 in. The turret indexes in 0.4 seconds per station, and milling-capable MC versions add rotary tooling. Current machines are offered with the MAPPS control or a FANUC control. The SL-603 is used for large shafts, pipe threading, oil-country tubular goods, rolls and other heavy turned parts where a big spindle bore and long bed are needed.
