Technical Description

The South Bend Turnado Manual Lathe is a robust, precision-engineered machine designed for heavy-duty turning operations. Equipped with Sony 2-axis digital readouts (DROs), it ensures accurate positioning and measurement for both longitudinal and cross-feed movements. The lathe features a tailstock with a 2.5-inch spindle diameter, 6 inches of travel, and a Morse taper No. 4 center, allowing for versatile workpiece support. Threading capabilities are available in both imperial and metric units, with a wide range of thread selections. Two steady rests are included for added workpiece stability during long or delicate operations. The machine offers a swing over bed and saddle wings of 20 inches, a swing over cross slide of 13 inches (14 inches without chip guard), and a swing over compound rest of 4 inches. The headstock features an 8-inch D-1 Cam-Lock spindle nose, a Morse taper No. 5 center, and a 3.15625-inch hole through the spindle. Spindle speeds range from 30 to 1580 RPM, powered by a two-speed motor (1800/900 RPM, 10/5 HP). The 13-inch wide, 150-inch long bed provides a distance between centers of 132 inches. The gearbox delivers 60 thread selections, with a thread range of 2-3/4" to 160" t.p.i. (using a 20T stud gear), longitudinal feeds from 0.0021" to 0.1242", and cross-feeds from 0.0011" to 0.0678". The lead screw measures 1-3/8" x 4". Saddle cross-feed travel is 12.25 inches (14 inches with taper attachments), and the compound rest offers 3.5 inches of travel. The square tool post opening is 1" x 1.109375". The tailstock allows for a 0.5-inch set-over in either direction. Overall dimensions are 162 inches long, 65 inches wide, and 76 inches high, with an approximate weight of 12,000 lbs.
