What's the difference between a reciprocal surface grinder and a Blanchard?
A reciprocal surface grinder runs a rectangular table under a horizontal wheel — the everyday toolroom machine. A Blanchard-type rotary grinder uses a vertical spindle and a round chuck for high-volume flattening of plates and castings. Aucto lists both under Surface Grinders.
Do I need a 6×18 or an 8×18 surface grinder?
Size the chuck to the largest part you grind in one setup. 6×18 is the classic toolroom machine; 8×16 and 8×18 buy more width. Listings show table size, HP and whether downfeed is automatic.
