A+Technical Description
The 2020 Haas GM2 5AX is a 5-axis gantry-style vertical machining center designed for large-format, complex part machining requiring simultaneous multi-axis contouring. The GM2 5AX features a fixed-bridge gantry architecture that maximizes structural rigidity and thermal stability, enabling consistent accuracy when machining oversized aerospace, mold, and structural components. The machine accommodates a 60 x 30 in. worktable, providing a generous surface area for large workpieces and multi-part fixturing setups. The two additional rotary axes — a tilt/rotary head or table — give operators full 5-axis simultaneous capability for complex contoured surfaces, undercuts, and compound-angle features that would otherwise require multiple setups on 3-axis equipment. Spindle speed reaches 12,000 RPM on a CAT40 taper interface. The spindle drive delivers ample power for aggressive stock removal in steel, titanium, and aluminum, while the high spindle speed supports fine-finish contouring on contoured aerospace profiles. Linear guideways on all axes ensure smooth, low-friction motion, and the gantry structure keeps the spindle positionally stable across the full table length. Control is via the Haas NGC (Next Generation Control), which provides full 5-axis programming support, dynamic work offsets, tool center point control (TCPC), and a large intuitive color display. The NGC also supports probing routines, macro B programming, and wireless networking for DNC file transfer. The GM2 5AX is well-suited to low-to-medium volume production of large, complex parts in aerospace, defense, and heavy industrial sectors.
