Technical Description

The 2003 Bridgeport VMC 1000 is a 3-axis vertical machining center produced by Bridgeport Machines, Inc. in the final years of Connecticut-based manufacturing before the Hardinge acquisition. The machine features a 43-inch by 20-inch worktable with a 22-tool carousel automatic tool changer and a BT 40 or CAT 40 spindle taper. The spindle motor delivers 15 HP with a standard speed range of 40 to 8,000 RPM and an optional 10,000 RPM high-speed configuration. X-axis travel is 40 inches, Y-axis travel is 20 inches, and Z-axis travel is 20 inches. The machine is equipped with a Heidenhain iTNC 530 CNC control, providing conversational Klartext and ISO G-code programming with high-speed contouring, Look Ahead block processing, and comprehensive tool management. Rapid traverse rates are 394 IPM on all linear axes. The VMC 1000 is built with a precision-ground cast-iron base and column with recirculating-ball linear guideways and preloaded ballscrews on all three axes. Standard equipment includes flood coolant, automatic lubrication, and coolant-through-spindle capability. Overall machine dimensions are approximately 118 inches long by 87 inches wide by 106 inches tall, with a machine weight of approximately 11,000 lbs. The 2003 Bridgeport VMC 1000 was one of the most widely sold CNC machining centers in the North American market and benefits from extensive service documentation, parts availability, and operator familiarity.
