Technical Description

The 1991 Fadal VMC20 is a 3-axis vertical machining center representing Fadal Engineering's large-format VMC platform, providing a 40 by 20-inch work envelope for machining large workpieces in steel, cast iron, and aluminum. The machine is built at Fadal's Chatsworth, California facility with box-way construction for maximum rigidity under heavy cutting loads. The CAT40 taper spindle delivers 15 HP of continuous power at a standard maximum speed of 7,500 RPM, with an optional 10,000 RPM high-speed spindle available. Axis travels are 40 inches in X, 20 inches in Y, and 20 inches in Z, with a work table measuring 40 by 20 inches. The box-way guideways provide the stiffness needed for heavy-duty roughing passes in ferrous materials as well as the damping characteristics required for quality finishing operations. Machine control is the Fadal CNC 88HS, Fadal's proprietary conversational and ISO G-code platform widely used across North American manufacturing. The 21-tool automatic tool changer supports complex multi-operation production cycles without manual intervention. Machine weight is approximately 10,500 lbs. The VMC20 is well-suited to shops producing large structural components, fixtures, mold bases, or die plates that require a large X-Y work area within a rigid, well-supported American-made VMC platform.
