Technical Description

The 1998 Fadal VMC3016L is a 3-axis vertical machining center that extends the standard VMC3016 platform with a longer X-axis travel, providing an expanded machining envelope suited to elongated workpieces and multi-fixture setups. The "L" designation denotes the long-table configuration, which increases X travel to 36 inches compared to the 30-inch travel of the standard VMC3016, while maintaining the same 16-inch Y and 20-inch Z travels. The worktable measures 36 by 16 inches and is equipped with standard T-slots for workholding. The additional X travel is particularly advantageous when machining extrusions, die-cast housings, or other long-profile components that benefit from extended longitudinal travel without repositioning. The spindle accepts CAT40 tooling and operates at a standard maximum speed of 7,500 RPM, driven by a 15 HP continuous-rated motor. Optional high-speed spindle packages at 10,000 RPM and 15,000 RPM were available at time of manufacture. The 1998 VMC3016L is equipped with the Fadal CNC 88HS control, offering conversational and G-code programming, rigid tapping, and DNC compatibility. The automatic tool changer provides efficient multi-tool management for production and prototype work. Overall machine dimensions are approximately 86 inches long by 68 inches wide by 84 inches tall, and the machine weighs approximately 15,000 pounds. The VMC3016L is well suited to job shops and production environments requiring extended X travel in a compact, floor-efficient footprint.
