Technical Description

The 2018 Hurco VM1G is a 3-axis vertical machining center based on the VM1 platform with the addition of linear glass scale encoders on all axes. The "G" suffix designates the glass scale option, which provides direct position measurement of the axis carriages independent of the ballscrew drive system. This eliminates positioning errors from ballscrew wear, thermal expansion, and backlash accumulation, delivering improved long-term positioning accuracy and repeatability compared to the standard rotary encoder configuration. Axis travels are identical to the standard VM1 at 24 inches in X, 16 inches in Y, and 20 inches in Z, with a worktable measuring 30 inches by 14 inches featuring T-slots for flexible workholding. The spindle is driven by a 15 HP motor reaching speeds up to 8,000 RPM through a CAT40 taper, supporting milling, drilling, boring, and tapping in steel, aluminum, cast iron, and engineering plastics. The 2018 VM1G is equipped with Hurco's WinMax conversational CNC control, which interfaces with the glass scale feedback to take full advantage of the enhanced position measurement capability. WinMax supports simultaneous conversational and G-code programming, a large touchscreen interface, DXF file import, Ethernet connectivity, and integrated toolpath simulation. Standard equipment includes an 18-tool automatic tool changer. Machine weight is approximately 6,000 pounds. The VM1G is particularly well suited to toolroom and precision component applications where long-term positioning accuracy is required without periodic ballscrew compensation, making it a preferred choice for tight-tolerance work or shops that require consistent accuracy over extended machine life and high cycle counts.
