Technical Description

The 2018 Zimmermann FZ35 is a 5-axis large-format gantry portal machining center manufactured by F. Zimmermann GmbH of Denkendorf, Germany. Designed for the simultaneous 5-axis machining of structural aerospace components, large tooling, molds, and composite structures, the FZ35 is built around a robust traveling-gantry architecture in which the portal moves along floor-level X-axis guideways over a stationary workpiece table. The reinforced portal frame and enlarged Z-axis cross-section provide the rigidity required for productive roughing of steel and cast alloys as well as high-speed finishing of light metals, plastics, and composites. The motorized 2-axis milling head delivers true 5-axis simultaneous contouring for complex aeronautical surfaces. The high-frequency milling spindle operates at up to 18,000 RPM and is rated at 28 kW (approximately 37.5 HP), with HSK-63A tooling and hydraulic tool clamping with external minimum quantity lubrication. X-axis travel is configurable from 3,000 to 6,000 mm (118 to 236 inches) depending on machine build; Y-axis from 2,360 to 3,360 mm (92.9 to 132.3 inches); Z-axis from 1,000 to 1,500 mm (39.4 to 59.1 inches). All linear axes run on preloaded recirculating roller slideways driven by ground ballscrews. The machine is controlled by a Siemens 840D CNC system. Table lengths typically range from 5,000 to 8,000 mm with widths of 2,000 to 3,000 mm. Due to its highly configurable nature, overall footprint and weight vary significantly by installation and X-axis length.
