Technical Description

The 2018 Zimmermann FZ37 is a 5-axis high-speed gantry portal machining center produced by F. Zimmermann GmbH of Denkendorf, Germany, engineered for large-scale precision machining in the aerospace, automotive, and tooling industries. The FZ37 employs a traveling-portal gantry design with a modular construction that allows X-axis travel lengths from 3,000 to 40,000 mm (118 to 1,575 inches), accommodating the longest aerospace structural components and composite molds. Y-axis travels range from 2,500 to 6,000 mm (98.4 to 236.2 inches) and Z-axis from 1,250 to 3,000 mm (49.2 to 118.1 inches). The machine is equipped with a dynamic 2-axis VH20 or VH30 motorized milling head for full 5-axis simultaneous contouring. The VH20 head develops 45 kW (approximately 60 HP) and the VH30 develops up to 74 kW (approximately 99 HP), with maximum spindle speeds of 24,000 RPM for high-speed aluminum and composite applications. The A-axis swivels through 110 degrees and the C-axis rotates through 360 degrees, enabling unrestricted 5-axis positioning. Feed rates reach 60 m/min with accelerations to 5 m/s2 for high dynamic performance. The table load capacity is 5,000 kg per square meter. All axes are driven on preloaded recirculating roller guideways. The CNC control is the Siemens 840D. Due to the highly configurable modular design, overall machine footprint and weight depend on the specific X-axis length and configuration selected.
