Technical Description

The 2020 Mazak V550 is a 3-axis vertical machining center from Mazak's Mazatech series, designed for heavy-duty milling of large workpieces requiring substantial cutting force and a wide work envelope. Note: the V550 is a legacy model no longer in production; a 2020 listing reflects a previously owned machine that has been resold. The V550 features a worktable measuring 55.1 by 21.7 inches and axis travels of 41.3 inches in X, 22.1 inches in Y, and 21.7 inches in Z, providing a generously sized work zone for large dies, mold bases, fixture plates, and structural components. The spindle produces 30 HP of continuous power through a geared CAT-50 taper drive, with a standard maximum speed of 3,500 RPM optimized for torque-intensive operations in steel and cast iron; a high-speed spindle option raises the maximum to 6,000 RPM for aluminum and non-ferrous applications. The CAT-50 taper interface accommodates large-diameter face mills, boring bars, and heavy roughing cutters with excellent rigidity. At approximately 18,700 pounds, the V550's structural mass contributes significantly to its vibration-damping capability and cutting stability under heavy interrupted cuts. The machine is equipped with the Mazatrol M-32 conversational CNC, which allows operators to generate and edit machining programs interactively at the control panel. The automatic tool changer supports multi-operation programs, enabling complex workpieces to be completed in a single setup.
